10 Tips to Survive Your First College Party
As you get ready for your first college party, it’s natural to have a mix of excitement and nervousness about what to expect. Whether you’re a social butterfly or a bit of an introvert, going to your first college party can be both exhilarating and overwhelming.
Not only are you in a completely new environment, but you’re also surrounded by total strangers. That’s why I’ve put together this survival guide to help you make the most of this rite of passage.
From bringing the proper essentials to knowing your limits when it comes to party punch, I’ve got you covered with 10 key tips to ensure you not only survive but thrive at your first party in college. This way, you’ll be wise enough to avoid some common freshman pitfalls and fully enjoy the party scene at your college.
Types of College Parties
College parties can take many different forms, from dorm room hangouts and tailgates to frat parties and all-day block parties. Some parties might be themed and can take place on campus or off campus. The types of party you can expect really just depends on the college you attend.
If you go to a big university, there will probably be a good mix of parties going on every week. But if you go to a smaller school, the party scene likely won’t be as diverse. It also depends how strict your college is with parties and social gatherings.
Additionally, a lot of colleges nowadays have suites and apartments for student housing, which can be popular locations for parties.
10 College Party Tips
Parties can be a thrilling part of the college life, offering students a chance to take a break from their studies to socialize and create unforgettable memories.
College parties are often portrayed in movies and TV shows as wild, anything-goes events. But the reality can be quite different, and more importantly, your experience is in your control.
It’s essential to balance fun with safety so you don’t have a poor experience and put your well-being as risk. That’s why it’s important to take a few precautionary steps and learn how to properly conduct yourself at the party before you go.
1. Hydrate & Eat Food Beforehand
Between socializing, dancing, and singing the typical college party anthems, you’re likely going to be pretty tired by the end of the night. That’s why it’s always smart to drink plenty water before, during, and after the party to keep your energy levels up and prevent dehydration.
You also don’t want to show up to the party on empty stomach, especially if you plan on drinking. Having a healthy and balanced meal before heading out will help slow down the absorption of alcohol into your body.
It also provides sustained energy, so you can enjoy the night without feeling sluggish. Staying hydrated and well nourished is crucial if you want to enjoy your time at the party and not wake up with a killer hangover.
2. Bring Essentials
It doesn’t matter if you go to a frat party, a dorm party, or some other college party off campus, you should always bring a few essential items with you. Perhaps the most important item to bring is your phone.
Having your phone handy at the party — and bringing it fully charged — will allow you to stay in touch with your friends if you lose them and anyone else you may need to contact in case of emergency or if you need a ride home.
Other essentials you’ll want to bring include your ID, your keys, and either some cash or a credit/debit card. If you want to be a little more cautious, you can also bring a self-defense item, such as pepper spray or a keychain alarm with a strobe light.
3. Don't Go Alone
Going with a couple friends from school ensures that you have someone to watch your back, especially if things get chaotic or if alcohol is involved. Having a group means you have people who can help you if you feel unwell or need to leave quickly.
Additionally, friends can prevent risky situations, such as arguments that turn into physical altercations. Parties can be unpredictable, and having trustworthy people with you can make the experience safer and more enjoyable.
Having your friends by your side at the party gives you the opportunity to make some good memories with them and become even better friends. Plus, they can help alleviate some social anxiety or nervousness you may get.
4. Know Your Limits
If you’re not used to drinking alcohol but want to try it — and you’re of age — the best option is to just have one drink and see how you feel after some time has passed. From there, you can begin to gauge your alcohol tolerance and decide whether you’re okay to have another drink or not.
If you feel yourself becoming a little buzzed, I recommend not drinking for the rest of the night or at least take a break and have a water and a snack. Additionally, you should always check on the friends you came to the party with to make sure they’re okay.
Since this is your first college party, and you’re likely around a bunch of strangers you can’t fully trust, you don’t want to become too intoxicated to the point where you can’t control yourself.
This can lead to a slippery slope where you’ll likely end up embarrassing yourself, risk losing your personal items, and just regret the whole night completely the next morning.
5. Be Careful With Drinks
It’s important to stay mindful of the drinks you and your friends get at the party. You never want to accept a drink from someone you don’t know unless you see them pour it and hand it to you directly.
Or you can always try to find an unopened can of beer or seltzer to drink if you want to be 100% safe. You also never want to leave your drink unattended.
Doing this ensures no one tampers with your drink and puts any harmful substances in it. The goal of a college party is to have fun, but your well-being should be your top priority while
6. Don't Give Into Peer Pressure
Just because drinking and engaging in risky behaviors at college parties is common practice, doesn’t mean you have to. It’s better to stay true to yourself and your values than succumbing to the approval of others.
At college parties, peer pressure can take many forms, from drinking excessively to trying substances you’re uncomfortable with, or other dangerous activities. Giving into these pressures can cause health issues and puts yourself at risk of facing legal problems and getting kicked out of college.
By standing firm in your choices, you not only protect your well-being but are also maintaining your integrity. True friends and genuine connections are built on mutual respect and understanding, not on coerced actions.
Of course, college is a time for personal growth and discovery, but it’s perfectly okay to set boundaries and make choices that you’re more comfortable with, especially at college parties where things can get out of hand quickly.
7. Know Your Surroundings
Another key college party tip that will help keep you safe is knowing your surroundings. Doing this allows you to locate exits at the party in case of emergencies, enabling you to act quickly if needed.
You’ll also want to check out the area beforehand so you know how to get home. If the party is off campus, try looking at it on your GPS and see which routes you can use to get there and back.
You never know what might happen at a college party, so it’s best to stay alert and be aware of where you’re at so can leave safely in case something goes wrong.
8. Have a Safe Way Home
Before you head to the party, it’s a good idea to figure out how you’re getting back home. If the party is within walking distance, then you won’t have to do much planning.
Just make sure to avoid walking back in dimly lit areas you aren’t familiar with — stick to populated routes, preferably near campus security. However, you’ll need to use a rideshare service like Uber or have a sober friend drive you back if the party is further away.
9. Leave With Your Friends
Another key part of getting home safely involves leaving with the people you came with. The last thing you want to do is leave by yourself or with some stranger, especially if you’ve been drinking.
When the party is starting to wind down, round up your friends and head out together so you know everyone gets home safe and doesn’t get in any trouble.
Before the party starts, talk to your friends about what time everyone wants to leave and possible transportation needs so everyone is on the same page. This way, you won’t have to worry about how you’re getting home once the party is over.
10. Be Yourself & Have Fun
While taking care of your well-being should be your main priority at a college party, you don’t have to let that stop you from having a good time. it’s all about striking the right balance between fun and safety while staying true to yourself.
As you get ready for the party, remember that everyone’s in the same boat, eager to make new connections and have a good time. Don’t hesitate to break the ice by joining in on party games or striking up conversations about shared classes or interests.
Keep an eye out for icebreaker activities; they’re perfect for easing those initial jitters and meeting people. Your authentic self is your best asset, so let your personality shine through. With a positive attitude and these tips in mind, you’re all set to have a blast and create some unforgettable college memories.
